The Solution

Before ground was even broken, The Uptown’s innovative vision for new housing, strategic retail space, open parks and streetscape improvements was heralded as the Pacific Coast Builders Conference (PCBC) Gold Nugget Award of Merit for the best on-the-boards site plan.

Now, as construction is underway and plans call for a staggered opening of the three buildings in 2008, Oakland’s exciting future is coming into focus.

The design of Phase I incorporates three, five-story buildings designed to look as though they were built over time. Each will be uniquely branded as its own living experience – sophisticated, traditional and hip. Each building will have a lobby and at least one courtyard to call its own, while other amenities will be grouped together.

Common areas will feature a double-height living room with a fireplace, a kitchen and seating area, dedicated poker room, theater room, outdoor seating with a fireplace and grill, pool, spa and fitness center.

The streets will be lined with porch stoops and landscaping to create a pedestrian-friendly and safe environment, and are designed to merge the new and existing neighborhoods into one community.

Nearby, the historic Oakland Fox Theatre is undergoing a major renovation. The local landmark, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, will host live concerts and be the new home for the Oakland School for the Arts, supplementing the area’s authentic, artistic aesthetic.

Uptown’s 25,000-square-foot park will be home to another neighborhood landmark.  Renowned Oakland sculptor Mario Chiodo will present “Remember Them,” a public art program featuring 24 heroes of history. The display will be coupled with an educational program, developed by Stanford University, to let children experience history in a new way.
