NorthField Stapleton
It’s been nothing but good news for Forest City’s Northfield Stapleton development located at I-70 and Quebec Street in Denver, Colo. The center hasn’t officially opened yet; however, there have been a number of major grand openings of high-profile anchors.
Northfield Stapleton is an open-air, 1.2 million-square-foot retail center anchored by Macy’s, Bass Pro Shops Outdoor World, SuperTarget and Harkins Theatres. Northfield provides a pedestrian-friendly outdoor setting combined with specialty shops, restaurants and entertainment. It will offer a convenient, appealing gathering place for everyone to enjoy – a neighborhood hub where residents will gather with friends and family to shop, dine and relax. Northfield is right at home in Stapleton’s “urban tapestry” of residences, shops, offices, parks and schools – a walkable, environmentally responsible community of classic city architecture.
According to Kem Blue, regional vice president/general manager, Forest City Commercial Management, more great things are in store for Northfield Stapleton.
“We have a lot going on here. Harkins Theatres Northfield 18 recently opened on April 7, with a grand opening gala on April 6,” he said.
Other store grand openings have included SuperTarget, Circuit City and Bass Pro Shops Outdoor World. Northfield’s official grand opening will be in October of this year with the opening of Macy’s.
The Challenge
Northfield is part of Forest City’s Stapleton development. Stapleton is a mixed-use, master-planned community that’s currently under construction on the former site of Denver’s Stapleton International Airport. At 7.5 million square miles (4,700 acres), it is one of the largest urban infill projects in the nation.
“Northfield is located on the northern half of Stapleton,” said Kem. “It sits on the airport property on former runways. As part of our commitment to sustainability, instead of demolishing the runways, we recycled them for use in Northfield’s asphalt.”
According to Larry Klein, Forest City vice president of Commercial Development, Northfield filled a void in the area.
“Other nearby retail areas had been developed, so there definitely was a need in Stapleton,” he said. “Plus, Northfield helped with the financing which enabled us to build more homes. We’ve been working on Northfield for a couple of years so it’s opening in phases.”
