Our Strategy

While Forest City has a long way to go with regards to
Sustainability, the company has made great progress in its approach and actions. Forest City’s first experience with sustainable development began with Stapleton in Denver. Now, Forest City’s commitment is evident throughout its business and at its properties of all types, across the country.

To date, Forest City has utilized hundreds of environment-friendly, sustainable practices, including: energy-efficient lighting and buildings; large-scale recycling programs; energy conservation and alternative energy forms; water management; alternative transportation, parks and open space preservation; and healthy living concepts.

Forest City has continued to adapt business practices and embrace a new standard of environmental performance. For example, Forest City has made a commitment to the LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) green building rating system and requires that new developments use the appropriate LEED applications to direct and influence project design and construction.

Forest City communicates with its partners, tenants and residents through initiatives such as the GreenHouse Program, which offers advice on sustainability and green living practices. Forest City has also created the Sustainable Building Reference Guide, which provides retail tenants with educational materials on green building practices. In addition, Forest City’s business cards, internal publications and annual reports are printed on recycled paper using soy or vegetable-based inks.

To further institutionalize Forest City’s sustainability commitment, in 2006, the company appointed a director of
Sustainability Initiatives and a director of Energy Management. Forest City also established a cross-functional task force to continually identify and promote best practices and opportunities to integrate green thinking into its business. Forest City has also invested in education for its associates and other internal programs to ensure that sustainability remains top of mind for everyone.

Forest City’s approach is designed to be practical and actionable. The company believes in sustainability and strives to deliver on its commitment in everything it does.
