Construction on the Mercantile building began prior to World War II. Due to the high demand of construction materials, it became the only skyscraper completed during the war. When finished, it was the tallest building west of the Mississippi. The exterior art deco design is topped by a neon-lighted, four-sided clock and ornamental spire. The interior includes a marble lobby, Art Deco murals and decorative metal work.
